El Michels Affair – “C.R.E.A.M.” (Wu-Tang Cover)

At the Record Fest on Saturday, I traded a 7″ single of El Michels Affair “C.R.E.A.M.” & “Glaciers of Ice” for Let It Bleed by the Stones. I only got rid of the 7 inch because I have the full length LP of Wu-Tang covers, Enter The 37th Chamber.  I was really excited about that 45 when it was released and I was a little sad to see it go, but it’s in good hands and I’m glad it’s getting played again.

I really like the concept of instrumental jazz, funk, or soul musicians doing interpretations of hip hop songs. There are many examples of this but some that come to mind are Charlie Hunter‘s cover of A Tribe Called Quest‘s “Electric Relaxation” (called “Mystic Relaxation” off of his Return of the Candyman album), or Reuben Wilson‘s Boogaloo To The Beastie Boys album from 2004.  My band in college did a cover of Snoop’s “Tha Shiznit”.  Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately?) I don’t have a copy of that to post.
